Recensement des Illinois, 1732

Background
(general information on the area to put it in the context of history)

In 1731, the Province of Louisiana (including the Illinois country) was transferred from the control of the French Company of the Indies to the King of France. The original census includes the names of residents, however the transcription by Margaret Cross Norton used here did not include the names. Robert de Berardinis transcribed the census with the names of residents in his article "1732 French Census of Illinois" published in the Illinois State Genealogical Society Quarterly. Within the article, de Berardinis mentions some potential problems with the Norton transcription including:

  • The translation of the heading "land in good condition" can be more accurately translated "the total arpents of arable land.

  • The term "oxen" might be better translated as male cattle.

  • The term "stables" might also mean pig sties, so might be better translated as animal shelters.

The following map shows the locations of the settlements included in the census.
